Buffalo supermarket shooting reflects law enforcement’s fears

May 15, 2022 by abcnews.go.com Leave a Comment

Law enforcement officials say the Buffalo, New York, supermarket shooting has underscored their long-held fear that someone could be radicalized online, have access to guns, take inspiration from prior attacks and then carry out an act of murderous violence against a soft target, like a grocery store. Ten people -- most of whom were Black -- were killed in Saturday's mass shooting in Buffalo in a rampage authorities are calling a "racially-motivated hate crime." The 180-page document believed to have been written by the Buffalo suspect, 18-year-old Payton Gendron, includes praise for the 2015 mass shooting at a Charleston, South Carolina, church where nine Black parishioners were gunned down. Evidence points to the Buffalo shooting being a calculated, racially-motivated execution by a teenager who appeared to have been targeting Black people, according to multiple sources and a review of FBI cases and testimony. The hate-filled document apparently written by Gendron … [Read more...] about Buffalo supermarket shooting reflects law enforcement’s fears

Millennials vs. boomer. Who will succeed L.A. County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl?

May 15, 2022 by www.latimes.com Leave a Comment

After Sheila Kuehl announced she was not seeking reelection to the L.A. County Board of Supervisors, the political maneuvering began. The jockeying for the open seat intensified after district lines were redrawn in December in a once-in-a-decade process, bringing some conservative-leaning parts of the San Fernando Valley into Kuehl’s 3rd District. That set the stage for Bob Hertzberg (D-Van Nuys) and Henry Stern (D-Malibu), state senators who represent parts of the Valley, to mount campaigns. They are running against West Hollywood City Council Member Lindsey Horvath, who is backed by Kuehl, and three other candidates in a race where homelessness and crime have emerged as defining issues before the June 7 primary. The supervisors are sometimes referred to as the “five little kings” because of their unglamorous but powerful jobs controlling an annual budget of nearly $39 billion in a county of more than 10 million people . Colorado tops in bank robberies in 2021; some blame fentanyl

May 15, 2022 by www.denverpost.com Leave a Comment

By ALLISON SHERRY , The Associated Press DENVER — A few days before Christmas last year, a man and a woman entered a KeyBank at 2nd Avenue and Broadway in Denver donning COVID masks and caps and passed a note to a bank teller: “Hand me all your money and you will not get hurt.” The teller, M.N., who said she was terrified, handed over a grip of bills, $1,269, along with a covert GPS tracker. The robbers fled in a dark-colored truck. Last year in Colorado, that scene, including the threatening note and the relatively small take, happened almost 200 times. In 2021, Colorado’s FBI field office ranked No. 1 for bank robberies in the country. Normally, Colorado has between 110 and 120 bank robberies a year. That number dropped to 90 in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 lockdowns. Last year, though, it spiked to 195 robberies. “It is a lot,” said Michael Schneider, Denver FBI’s special agent in charge. “These are violent crimes. … These have a significant impact on … [Read more...] about Colorado tops in bank robberies in 2021; some blame fentanyl

Joining RCEP is a must (1)

This Congress has understood what business needs to grow and prosper and, to a commendable extent, has given it to them. Since 2019, the 18th Congress, with the urging of the President, has passed at least five remarkable laws that have changed the business landscape. That indicated “we’re not just making promises, we’re giving you what you need to be globally competitive.” The latest that got the crowd cheering was Republic Act No. 11659 or the amendments to the Public Service Act (PSA). The PSA redefines what an 86-year-old law said about public utilities. Under the new measure, public utilities will be limited to entities that operate, manage, or control: (1) distribution and transmission of electricity, (2) petroleum pipeline transmission systems; (3) water pipeline distribution systems and wastewater pipeline systems; (4) seaports; and (5) certain classes of public utility vehicles. For everything else, such as telecommunications, shipping, airlines, airports, expressways, … [Read more...] about Joining RCEP is a must (1)

Peter Bergen is CNN's national security analyst, a vice president at New America and a professor of practice at Arizona State University. His forthcoming paperback is " The Cost of Chaos: The Trump Administration and the World ." View more opinion on CNN. (CNN) The story is all-too familiar: A man allegedly armed with grievance and a gun kills fellow citizens who are strangers to him, singling them out only because of their race or creed. It's a very American tale of domestic terrorism which appears to have struck once again on Saturday, this time in the city of Buffalo, New York. And it is playing out with increasing frequency in the United States. In June 2015, a white nationalist killed nine people attending a Black church in Charleston, South Carolina. The shooter was hoping to foment a race war. Peter Bergen In October 2018, during a shooting at a synagogue near Pittsburgh, an anti-Semite killed 11 people.
