More info Electricity suppliers in the UK have long paid the highest price all generators agree upon. Now, a groundbreaking new report from a climate think tank claims over £7billion could have been shaved off household bills over the past two years if this system more fairly reflected the lower cost of renewables. Instead of changing the market setup, low-carbon producers now face steeper windfall taxes than their oil and gas counterparts, the proceeds of which go towards energy support schemes. In fact, bills have risen collectively by up to £7.2billion across two years, according to a report by the Carbon Tracker Initiative (CTI). Shell profit doubles to record as war drives up energy costs
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 LONDON (AP) — Global energy giant Shell said Thursday that its annual profits doubled to a record high last year as oil and natural gas prices soared after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. London-based Shell Plc posted adjusted earnings of $39.9 billion for 2022 in its financial results for the final three months of the year. Adjusted earnings in the fourth quarter, which exclude one-time items and fluctuations in the value of inventories, rose by 50%, to $9.8 billion, from the same period a year earlier. Shell is the latest oil company to report bumper profits, which risks reigniting public anger that the fossil fuel industry do more to offset high energy bills for households and small businesses as well as cut climate-changing carbon emissions. U.S.-based Exxon Mobil also posted record annual profits days earlier, while U.K. rival BP and France’s … [Read more...] about Shell profit doubles to record as war drives up energy costs

Let’s have some rational thinking about bacon sandwiches — and leave out LETTUCE, avocado and healthier bread
IN these difficult and uncertain times, there is one question that needs asking more than any other. It’s this. Why can’t people make decent bacon sandwiches any more? I bought one the other day and it had lettuce in it. Lettuce, for God’s sake. Lettuce is for rabbits and goats, not a fully grown man who needs something after a big night to soak up all the sick. There were also traces of avocado, which I know is treated as a foodstuff by silly, thin women in London. But me? I’d rather eat Ed Miliband . To make matters even worse, the bread was brown. Brown!! And not just brown but littered with seeds and kernels of God knows what. Someone had got it into their heads that the bacon sandwich is some kind of health thing, and it isn’t. It’s designed to cure the curse of vegetarianism , not ease us all into it. And things are no better at the other end of the spectrum. At a greasy spoon café last week, they gave me a bacon sarnie — and it was, like, £2.50 — filled … [Read more...] about Let’s have some rational thinking about bacon sandwiches — and leave out LETTUCE, avocado and healthier bread

Philippines and US Secure Deal for 4 Military Bases
The United States has gained access to four additional military bases in the Philippines, providing a critical piece of real estate from which to monitor the Chinese in the South China Sea and around Taiwan. The agreement closes a gap in the arc of US alliances stretching from South Korea and Japan in the north to Australia in the south. The Philippines, which borders two of the most dangerous potential flashpoints – Taiwan and the South China Sea – had been the missing link. The agreement, which partially reverses the US’s departure from their former colony more than 30 years ago, is significant. “There is no contingency in the South China Sea that does not necessitate access to the Philippines,” Gregory B Poling, director of the Southeast Asia program at Washington’s Center for Strategic and International Studies told the BBC . “The United States is not looking for permanent bases. It’s about locations, not bases.” Under the Enhanced Defence Cooperation Agreement … [Read more...] about Philippines and US Secure Deal for 4 Military Bases
