FAIRFIELD, Idaho — The Latest on winter storms slamming western U.S. states (all times local): 5 p.m. Idaho's rural mountain towns have been hit hard by several feet of snow this month— so much snow, in fact, that one ski area was forced to close while workers try to dig out equipment and make the slopes safe for skiers. The Soldier Mountain ski resort near the small town of Fairfield reported that it would be closed Thursday because of too much snow. The ski area could receive another foot of snow this week. The National Weather Service says weather spotters in the small town of Featherville have reported 60 inches (1.52 meters) of snow since Feb. 22. The mountain town of Stanley became marooned Wednesday after all three highways leading to the town were closed because of drifting snow, avalanches and the risk of more slides. ___ 4:50 p.m. Montana officials have identified a skier who died in an avalanche Tuesday. On Wednesday, Gallatin County sheriff's officials … [Read more...] about The Latest: Idaho ski resort closes due to too much snow

By Mark Gomez | [email protected] | Bay Area News Group PUBLISHED: February 19, 2019 at 10:36 am | UPDATED: February 19, 2019 at 10:50 am Fueled by a parade of storms in recent weeks that have blanketed the Sierra Nevada with several feet of snow, at least two ski resorts are reporting a record amount of snowfall this month — with more storms possible in the coming days. At Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows in the Tahoe area, 247 inches (about 20.5 feet) of snow have been recorded so far, shattering the previous February record of 196 inches set in 2017, according to Alex Spychalsky, a spokeswoman for the ski resort. Any additional snowfall this month could allow the resort to break its all-time record for snow in any month, 282 inches in January, 2017. Snowfall records at Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows date back to 1970. About 150 miles south at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, 190 inches of snow has been recorded so far this month at the resort’s main lodge … [Read more...] about In Sierra Nevada, some ski resorts report record February snowfall

French health authorities have warned of a surge in measles cases at the Val-Thorens ski resort, one of the highest in the Alps and a popular destination for both French and foreign tourists. The 18 recorded cases "are mostly young adults working at the station this season," the ARS regional health agency for the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes district said. It recommended that parents ensure that they and their children are vaccinated against the highly contagious disease, as thousands of families prepare to hit the slopes during winter school vacations in the coming weeks. Beyond the outbreak at Val-Tho, as it is popularly known by skiers, the agency said 12 other cases had been registered in the region since February 4. Cases have been rising in France and other parts of the developed world in recent years, the result of fewer children being vaccinated against a viral disease that causes rashes and inflammation which can quickly prove fatal. … [Read more...] about Health chiefs raise alarm over measles outbreak at French Alps ski resort
Ski resorts exist in some of the most environmentally sensitive places on earth so it seems only natural that they would strive to protect the land from which they prosper. From recycling wastewater to generating solar power to protecting the paths of migrating elk, resorts from the Sierras of California to the Green Mountains of Vermont are doing their part to reduce their carbon footprint and find a balance that lets skiers and riders enjoy the pristine alpine environment without destroying it. Each year the Ski Area Citizens Coalition grades western U.S. ski resorts on their environmental policies and practices. A criterion from four categories (habitat protection, protecting watershed, addressing global climate change, and environmental practices and policies) is tallied and each resort receives a grade. Regular “A” students on the SACC list include Squaw Valley, Park City, Deer Valley and Smugglers Notch. Perhaps the greenest of them all, however, is Aspen—a … [Read more...] about Aspen Snowmass: This Great Colorado Ski Resort Is Also The Greenest
