Landers Road and Route 151. Brandon Folsom Special to the Detroit Free Press Published 7:08 PM EDT Oct 13, 2018 Riva Bitrus said she'll cry tears of joy after she runs the Detroit Free Press/Chemical Bank Marathon on Oct. 21 in downtown Detroit. Six years ago, after a horrific auto accident, a month in the hospital and a year of rehabilitation, the farthest she could run was a couple blocks away from her doorstep in Romeo. Bitrus and three friends went bar-hopping the Monday before Thanksgiving in 2011. They piled into a car afterward heading to a friend's house in Bruce Twp. It was about 10 minutes away from downtown, and they were taking back roads. The driver was intoxicated.. The driver pulled onto Hipp Rd., a dead-end dirt road, but blew past the friend's driveway. The car busted through a locked gate and smashed head-on into a tree. Bitrus' friend, Alex, who was in the back seat, was killed. Last year, Boston drivers ranked the worst in the country, according to a study by the insurance company Allstate. Boston also ranked as the worst-driving of the 200 cities included in the study the year before that and the year before that. But with each new year comes the opportunity for improvement — if only incrementally. In 2018, Boston drivers climbed out from the worst overall ranking. The city is now second worst. And just barely. According to Allstate’s 2018 “best drivers” report, Boston ranked No. 199 out of 200. The ignominious label of worst-driving city now goes to Baltimore. So did Boston drivers actually get better, or did Baltimore drivers just get worse? Well, a little bit of both, according to Allstate.
