Officially, the Ravens’ training camp in Owings Mills ended Wednesday. In reality, well, that light at the end of the preseason tunnel is still pretty dim. “It feels like we’re in the middle of it,” outside linebacker Steven Means said with a grin Tuesday. The Ravens still have two games to play and two more roster cut-downs to figure out before their regular-season work can begin in earnest. On Sunday, they’ll face the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium, where they can extend their NFL-record preseason winning streak to 22 games . The nationally televised game will be light on stars, with both teams expected to rest several starters. That won’t rob the matchup of its intrigue, though. Here’s a key Raven to watch at each position. Quarterback: Tyler Huntley Lamar Jackson is sitting out Sunday’s game . So is Arizona starter Kyler Murray. Backup Colt McCoy missed the Cardinals’ preseason opener with arm soreness. All of which sets up an intriguing possibility: … [Read more...] about Ravens to watch at each position in Sunday’s preseason game vs. Cardinals

Giants’ injury deluge has Brian Daboll rethinking which key players to dress vs. Bengals
The Giants are so banged up, they are “revisiting” plans to play starters like Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley in Sunday night’s preseason home game against the Cincinnati Bengals. “We’re revisiting it based on some of the stuff that happened yesterday [in practice],” head coach Brian Daboll said of the starters’ plan, with at least 18 active roster players sidelined by injury. “We would like to play as many guys as we can, but I think we have to sit down as a staff and revisit it. I mean, we’re on like our sixth center.” That’s right: their sixth center. Eighth-year veteran Max Garcia, a third-team guard at the start of training camp, will be the Giants’ first-string center for this game. And Devery Henderson, the team’s backup left tackle, will start at left guard. That’s because starting center Jon Feliciano, backup Jamil Douglas, starting left guard/ emergency center Shane Lemieux, guard/center Ben Bredeson, rookie guard Josh Ezeudu, and break-glass backup guard/center … [Read more...] about Giants’ injury deluge has Brian Daboll rethinking which key players to dress vs. Bengals
Justin Fields finds Cole Kmet — and the offensive line makes moves: Brad Biggs’ 10 thoughts on the Chicago Bears’ 2nd preseason win
10 thoughts after the Chicago Bears got a scoring drive from their starters on the game’s first possession and didn’t look back in a 27-11 victory over the Seattle Seahawks Thursday night at Lumen Field. 1. The Justin Fields-to-Cole Kmet connection is something most thought they’d see more of last season. Kmet was productive in Fields’ rookie season and the tight end was easily the No. 2 target behind wide receiver Darnell Mooney for the quarterback. Kmet was targeted 52 times by Fields and made 32 receptions for 330 yards in 2021. That accounted for roughly half of his production (60 receptions for 612 yards), which stands to reason as Fields played in 12 games with 10 starts . The pair got going right away Thursday with Kmet catching a screen pass for 12 yards on the first play from scrimmage during a 10-play, 52-yard drive that led to a 35-yard Cairo Santos field goal. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy seemed to want to have Fields get the ball out of his hand quickly, and … [Read more...] about Justin Fields finds Cole Kmet — and the offensive line makes moves: Brad Biggs’ 10 thoughts on the Chicago Bears’ 2nd preseason win
Why the 49ers won’t be imminently cutting Jimmy Garoppolo after all
LATEST March 16, 11 a.m. As it turns out, there was a third option all along for the 49ers, and that's to remind everyone that teams view the cap deadline as more of an ephemeral threat than a looming financial threat. The 49ers are restructuring the contracts of George Kittle and Arik Armstead so that their respective cap hits help the team sit below the threshold before Wednesday's 1 p.m. PT deadline. That issue is now behind San Francisco, meaning the Niners no longer need to immediately cut Jimmy Garoppolo. But the fact that Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson is still on the market does leave the 49ers lacking suitors who may have once been pounding at the door for Jimmy G. If anything, teams might recognize that the Niners are still in a financially troublesome position, since keeping Garoppolo is $25 million more expensive than cutting him entirely; instead of trying to trade for a mediocre-to-above average quarterback, teams could just play the waiting game, in theory. … [Read more...] about Why the 49ers won’t be imminently cutting Jimmy Garoppolo after all
